Hadrian's Wall

Routes offered on this trail

The Hadrian's Wall path is one of the most iconic National trails in Britain.  Following in most part, the historic line of the Roman constructed wall spanning across Northern England from coast to coast.  A large proportion of the wall, forts and miles castles are still standing but you will also be crossing through the Northumberland National Park, with specular views.  The route can be walked in both directions or in small sections.  Spanning from the the quiet west coast village of Bowness-on-Solway to the vibrant City of Newcastle-upon-Tyne on the east coast.  Offering an abundance of history and beautiful scenery, this is a very popular National trail.

The Hadrian's Wall path is classed as an easy to moderate walk, great for novice long distance walkers or seasoned walkers alike. The route is very well marked and signposted.  Most people walk from East to West starting in Newcastle -upon-Tyne and finishing in Bowness-on-Solway.  The Romans built the wall in this direction, so you will be passing the miles stones in order.  If you would prefer to walk with the wind at your back, you are better off walking West to East.  It is your choice and preference.

On route you will have the opportunity to visit many museums and Roman forts, including Segedunum, Chesters fort, Housesteads and Birdoswald.  There is also the chance to extend your visit and follow the circular route to Vindolanda which houses the Roman camp and Militery museum, just south of Hadrian's Wall.

The mileage shown below is from where the Hadrian's Wall path starts and finishes each day and is for your guidance only. A large part of this walk includes along rural areas, so you will find that sometimes the accommodations are very close to the path and other times you will need to walk a little further to reach your accommodation. You will not be asked to walk any further than one and a half miles from the path to your accommodation, unless other wise stated. Please see the Itinerary pages for more details.

Dates to avoid in the area, due to large events taking all of the accommodation.
